Backdrops are coming...

Backdrops can instantly set the tone at an event - great fillers of odd spaces and provide fun photo opportunities for the whole crowd.

We just finished this Halloween canvas used for a neighborhood carnival... now working on ideas for a series of these that would be available for rental.

Remember when your world seemed smaller?

Growing up I knew the names of everyone at the local sandwich shop. I knew the guy who fixed my mom’s car and I knew that his daughter had gone north to college, was now married with a baby boy. I knew that the baby’s was named Christopher. My parents could call the bank teller by name. The local florist could find everyone’s house without using the GPS on his phone. The world was small enough that we could ride our bikes safely around the neighborhood and tell our friends things face to face. No posts, no tweets, no status updates.
Don’t get me wrong, I love technology. I love that I can read a magazine on my phone when I’m waiting in line. I love that I can text my brother when I really don’t feel like talking. I love ebay and I love etsy. I mention the world seeming smaller without even really feeling nostalgia, but rather just remembering a particular aspect of the past that has gone by the wayside... personal interaction. Actual conversations with people you might actually see again- people you know and can count on.
Studies show that the happiest people are the ones that report a strong sense of community. The women behind the website Two Doors Down know and promote this. I am thrilled to be featured on their site today. Read the full BLOG interview HERE
It is our mission to promote local businesses and artisans to support community growth and socially responsible living. Blending knowledge and insight, through a blog and directory, we hope to encourage our visitors to explore their communities and discover what may be just two doors down.

Happiness in Hectic Holidays

As a business owner that creates a physical product, this time of year can feel like I’m drowning with deadlines. I look forward to Christmas being here with the same zeal as a child, but for a different reason... to be finished. Don’t get me wrong - I love the holiday season, love seeing family and friends, and love when the actual day gets here so I can just rest. All of us have reasons that make this time of year extraordinarily busy, so here are two tips for finding happiness inside of hectic.

Define the five best moments of your day
A dear friend of mine gave me this simple assignment at a time when I was facing challenging health issues and was slipping into a funk. He said to be faithful to writing it down everyday and eventually it would shift my perspective of what I focused on. He couldn’t have been more right. I started noticing laughing with friends, how much I enjoyed driving by the fishing boats at Shem Creek, how good my latte tastes... things like that. Making a mental note of possible top five items renewed my awareness of how great the “little moments” of our day can be. A small way to take an active role in your happiness.
What were your five best moments today?

Creative kindness
Any random act of kindness can cause a positive ripple effect restoring our faith in the love and compassion of the human spirit.
Send someone a small gift anonymously.
Here is a creative idea: Pick up small florist vases at thrift stores or yard sales for a few cents. Buy a bundle of wrapped flowers, and arrange them in the vases yourself. While driving around finishing your Christmas errands, deliver them to random doorsteps or people you encounter who look like they need a reason to smile.

What makes me happy today

  • 1. 72 degree days in December

  • 2. My sister-in-law's health dramatically improving & her beautiful new son

  • 3. My friend finding out yesterday that she was now cancer free

  • 4. A christmas purchase I just made from a Fabulous Charleston based Artist

Small Business Saturday

When we all shop small, it will be huge.
Small Business Saturday is a day to support small business owners, help fuel the economy, and invigorate communities across the country. One purchase is all it takes!
Add COLOR to your Saturday from these small businesses...

Your table just got spicy!! The Sylvie Collection dinnerware offers a chic and mod alternative to boring dishes. Mix the colors up for a fun pop of color or choose a calm neutral palate. Every meal calls for a different color combination! Find these great plates HERE

Wonderful deco modern lines on this beautiful yellow and white pitcher made by Hall. I believe the pattern is “Nora”. With no chips, cracks or significant crazing it’s in great vintage condition. There are a couple of small glaze dimples that occurred during firing. It’s the perfect way to add a splash of color to your kitchen.

Say Yes Today

Wednesday are a day to wonder.
Don't you wonder how those people were
daring enough to do it?
You know, the ones you hear the stories about... The people who dared to quit their job and followed their passion into a new career. Now they seem to have cool projects, interesting clients, and freedom from bosses.

You wonder how they said YES.
Michael West of Nashville, Tennesse is one of those people. Following his creative passion lead him to commissions for clients like Ronnie Dunn and Taylor Swift.

Featured in Etsy's "Quit your Day Job" series
Michael West... I love industrial metal objects, letters, light fixtures, furniture, anything unique and from the machine age. They are becoming harder to find so I thought I would make my own. It all started while I was searching for a metal hotel arrow that I wanted to have in my shop — when I couldn’t find one I decided to make my own.
I enjoy creating new pieces and re-purposing even more. Making an object into something people will use and start a conversation about can be addicting. In fact it’s hard to sleep sometimes when I have an idea for a new project. I also love it when a customer inspires me with an idea they have for their home or business.

His advice on making the leap... Think outside the box and find your niche. Finding your passion is easier said than done and sometimes life will get in the way of that. Listen to yourself.
The most exciting thing that has come out of selling through Etsy... I sold a cowboy light fixture to Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn and got to go out to his place. Taylor Swift wants “SING” from me and I sold an arrow to Etsy which they used in one of their events. I sell to people all over the country and world and getting to meet new people is really the best part of it all. Making new relationships has been uplifting. With nice comments comes revitalization and the drive to keep on going.Find the complete interview HERE and visit his shop West Vintage Trading Company

Manage Mondays

Isn't it always Monday when we feel the surge to organize a stack of
paperwork or clean out that desk drawer?

can't overlook them on this!
Keys Organized
Have this hanging in your laundry room or kitchen and everyone in the family will know where to look. Other fun versions could say "Jackets" or "Bookbags"

Sometimes you just have to have that one item that makes you smile. Be on the lookout at thrift stores, yard sales, or even your grandmother's attic. The key is to look for shape or style you like and not focus on the finish or paint color. An easy coat of bright spray paint and a coat antiquing wax can make anything work in your decor.

Mod Chalkboard
This easy DIY project can be summed up in three steps
1. Buy a hollow door at a home improvement store (Lowes, Home Depot, etc.)
2. apply multiple coats of chalboard paint - even on sides
3. Hang anywhere you need lists, reminders, family note zones

Fur Love Friday

A friend sent this to me recently... a short story moms of small children can also appreciate.
An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of. He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.
The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks.
Curious I pinned a note to his collar, 'I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.'
The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar, 'He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3 and he's trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?'
______________________________________________________
The love of my life is my 115 pound black lab Boudreau. Being that I am an artist and work from a home studio, we spend nearly every moment of our days together. This smart, spoiled, adorable ball of fur has saved me these past two years and for this - every mischievous act and every middle of the night request to go out, is forgiven.

My husband and I have tried for over five years to have a baby. That roller coaster took us through failed IVF's, a diagnosis of "you will never be able to get pregnant", then two pregnancies, two miscarriages, and the still pending "maybe".
As forty looms in the near future for me, it takes true effort to stay positive about how our family will evolve. Boudreau helps with this. It is nearly impossible to lay in the bed mulling over the "what if's" when he plunks his leash on my pillow. It is hard to stay sad after yet another friend's baby shower when you are met at the door by tail wagging, pure excitement just because you showed up.

The love of (and for) a dog can snap you out of it... and into a world where joy comes from a simple walk around the neighborhood.

A Great DIY Counter Solution......Couture Version

This bathroom is scheduled to get a major renovation... eventually. The original formica countertop (came with house) desperately needed to be replaced and I just didn't want to spend money on a counter that was to come right back out.
The look of concrete counters has always been one of my favorites, so I designed a solution that gave me that look with little budget - very little!
Remove formica layer (support wood remains), skim with concrete, polish, seal, and wax.  Perfect concrete counter without the weight of solid concrete and the hassle of removing the sink.

An Attic Treasure

I didn't have to go far to find this treasure.
Ossie and I are only the second owners of our 1950 house and in the attic were a few interesting boxes left under piles of dust and insulation. In the very bottom of the very last box (also about the time I was about to ditch everything), I stumbled on what is now my favorite wall hangings ever. These are the original hand drawn plans to our home... perfectly yellowed and aged! A few great frames from the ever faithful IKEA and our dining room has FABULOUS and completely original artwork.

When you don't have Art

I want a LARGE piece of art for behind our headboard and since I know I will contemplate that decision for way too long, I decided to spruce up the wall to hold me over. The pattern began as a two tone rectangle design and just kept growing more rectangles. Fun accent wall with just tape & paint.
